Five patterns. Learn which one is yours.
Insomnia isn't one thing — it shows up in distinct patterns, each with a different cause and a different fix. Explore the five we treat, then take the free assessment to see which one fits you.
Hyperarousal Support
For when the body is tired but the mind refuses to settle — racing thoughts, evening anxiety, a nervous system that won't stand down.
Understand the Hyperarousal patternSleep-Onset Support
For long sleep-onset latency — lying in the dark for an hour or more before sleep finally arrives.
Understand the Sleep-Onset patternSleep-Maintenance Pathway
For sleep that begins but won't stay — repeated awakenings, or sleep that breaks apart a few hours in. Starts with a consultation.
Understand the Sleep-Maintenance patternEarly-Waking Support
For waking too early — 3 to 5 am, eyes open, the rest of the night out of reach.
Understand the Early-Waking patternCircadian Support
For drifted sleep timing — night owls, shift work, jet lag, and routines the body clock no longer recognises.
Understand the Circadian patternTake the Sleep Pattern Assessment™
Not sure which pattern is yours? The free clinical screener matches you in under five minutes — and flags when medical review is the safer step.
Take the Free Slumbr Assessment™Start with your sleep pattern
Take the free Assessment™
Answer a structured set of questions about your sleep timing, symptoms, triggers, medication use, and alarm symptoms.
Get matched to your pattern
Your result may suggest hyperarousal, sleep-onset, sleep-maintenance, early waking, circadian disruption, or need for medical review.
Choose the right level of care
Shop targeted support, subscribe monthly, or book a specialist physician consultation if your insomnia is persistent, severe, or complex.
Sleep with support
Follow a calm, structured protocol — with medical review available at any point along the way.
Not all insomnia is the same. Your sleep support should not be either.
Some people cannot fall asleep. Others fall asleep but wake repeatedly. Some wake too early. Some feel exhausted all day but become alert the moment they get into bed.
Slumbr Sleep Clinic™ starts by identifying your sleep pattern, then guides you toward the appropriate next step — targeted non-prescription support, a monthly sleep-support subscription, or specialist physician consultation.
A racing, wired mind
Your body is exhausted but your nervous system stays switched on, replaying the day and bracing for tomorrow.
Sleep that won't begin
You lie awake for what feels like hours before sleep finally arrives — long sleep-onset latency.
Sleep that keeps breaking
You drift off but surface again and again, or wake after a few hours and struggle to settle back.
Waking far too early
You're awake at 3–5am with no route back to sleep, or your whole sleep timing has drifted off course.
Monthly sleep support for a consistent routine
Slumbr sleep-support products are designed for consistent use as part of a targeted sleep routine. Each product may be purchased once-off, but monthly subscription offers better value and supports continuity.

Book Specialist Consultation — R1,500Responsible sleep care, not one-size-fits-all sleeping pills
Slumbr is built around pattern recognition and responsible treatment. The Sleep Pattern Assessment™ does not diagnose medical conditions, but it helps identify when non-prescription support may be suitable and when medical review is recommended. Prescription medication is only considered after consultation with a doctor.
What Slumbr will and will not prescribe
Sleep medicine is one of the most over-prescribed corners of clinical practice. Slumbr's formulary is deliberately narrow — we prescribe what the evidence supports, in the form the evidence supports, and we are explicit about what we will not. The list is short on purpose.
Prescription medicine for longer-term use
Where the evidence supports daily use and the safety profile is clean, treatment can continue on an ongoing basis after a consultation, with repeat dispensing arranged for you. Drug-class names only — specific molecules are agreed during the consultation.
-
Dual orexin receptor antagonist (DORA) — preferred class for hyperarousal
-
Compounded low-dose H1-selective agent — flagship for sleep maintenance
-
Prolonged-release melatonin — first-line for adults 55 and over
-
Low-dose sedating antidepressant — where mood symptoms accompany the sleep problem
Registered medicines are dispensed at their regulated Single Exit Price. For prescription medicines, a hard cap of 6 repeats applies per SA Medicines Act 22A(6), after which a follow-up consultation is required.
Once-off only, after consultation
Z-drugs and benzodiazepines for primary insomnia. These work — briefly. The evidence is clear that chronic use causes tolerance and rebound. Slumbr dispenses them as short courses only — less than 2–4 weeks, in line with international guidance. Each repeat is a fresh clinical decision.
-
Short-course Z-drug for sleep onset — fixed course, less than 2–4 weeks
-
Short-course Z-drug for sleep maintenance — fixed course, less than 2–4 weeks
-
Brief Z-drug adjunct during circadian re-timing — handful of doses only
No subscription option. After the course ends, a follow-up consultation is required to continue or change treatment.
What we will not prescribe
There are medicines often prescribed for sleep that we have removed from the Slumbr formulary because the evidence does not support them, or the harm-to-benefit ratio is wrong.
-
High-dose benzodiazepines as first-line for primary insomnia — dependence and arousal rebound
-
Off-label quetiapine for primary insomnia — cardiometabolic harm, no efficacy basis
-
Agomelatine — liver-dysfunction risk we are not willing to accept for a sleep indication
-
Compounded combinations without clear single-agent rationale
If a previous prescriber put you on any of these for sleep, a consultation with us can structure a safe transition.

The things people ask first
No. The Slumbr Sleep Pattern Assessment™ is not a diagnosis and does not replace medical advice. It helps identify likely sleep patterns that may guide product selection or discussion during consultation.
No. Non-prescription sleep-support products can be purchased directly. However, medical consultation is recommended for severe, persistent, complex, or high-risk insomnia — and the assessment will tell you when.
Prescription medication may only be considered after a specialist physician consultation where clinically appropriate. It is not available for direct purchase from the public store.
Yes. Products may be purchased once-off or by monthly subscription at a lower monthly price. You can pause or cancel anytime.
No. Slumbr does not provide emergency care. If you have suicidal thoughts, severe depression, confusion, chest pain, severe breathlessness, neurological symptoms, or feel unsafe, seek urgent in-person medical care.
